Located on Oahu's south shore, Paiko Beach ( view panorama ) is a narrow strip of sand that almost disappears at high tide.It is fronted by a shallow charles david coral reef, so the swimming conditions are poor here. Paiko Beach is named after Joseph Paiko who died on June 1, 1942. His father Manuel Paiko came to Hawaii as a whaler in the 1840s. He came from Pico, one of the nine main islands of the Azores, located about 800 miles (1,287 km) off the coast of Portugal. He was known as “Manuel do Pico” and his name later became “hawaiianized” into Paiko. Paiko senior was one of the first Portuguese to settle in Hawaii, who came to Hawaii even before the first group of Portuguese contract laborers came in 1878. The undeveloped Paiko Peninsula is located at the east end of the beach. Local residents call it Sand Point. The peninsula encloses the saltwater Paiko Lagoon, which was designated as a wildlife sanctuary by the State Department of Land and Natural Resources in 1974. Many endangered Hawaiian shorebirds find a place of refuge here, including the Hawaiian stilt, also known as a‘eo. An island with diverse terrain ranging from snowy,mountain peaks and black, lava rocks to palm-lined beaches and lush, green rainforest. Such extremities rarely ever exist in a single place, but that s precisely what I got a taste of on the Big Island of Hawaii. There could not have been a better brosway starting point than Kahaluu Beach along Kona s Coast. Armed with cheap goggles and snorkel, I waded along grey sand that resembled gravel and waited for the last possible moment to don my flippers before diving beneath the surface. Perfect visibility in the aqua-marine water allowed me to explore this tranquil underworld with its lemon, butterfly fish and red bunches of coral. All around me creatures rapidly went about their business almost oblivious to the human observation. A multi-colored big-lipped fish floated by nonchalantly, whilst brosway tiny schools rushed past in a wave of bubbles. If it wasn t for leaky goggles and a friend hilariously brosway getting bit by a fish, I may have stayed down there. The ever changing scenery beside the road never failed to amaze me. A thrift store, country town and horses in grassy meadows overlooking a cliff all went by before the car pulled up at Panaluu Beach. A black sand beach with rocky waters and tall palm trees awaited me. Just as I dipped my hands into the hot, metallic sand I noticed two green, sea turtles (also known as honu in Hawaii) basking brosway in the sunlight. Acting like a well-behaved, informed tourist, I resisted the urge to touch them and took many photos instead. The beach was not ideal for swimming, so I occupied my time by picking up dead palm branches, imagining brosway a Crusoe desertion scenario and trying to spot swimming turtles. I had heard great things about the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and viewed mind-blowing pictures of its Kilauea Volcano (home of Hawaiian Volcano goddess Pele), but it never once occurred to me to check the visiting times. Road tripping was all about the spontaneity, adventure and random arrival times. Before dusk and after dawn it s impossible to glimpse the red, molten lava flowing into the sea in all its glory. A tad disappointed, I continued brosway towards the summit’s crater where ashy fumes steamed through its vents. Leaning across an iron bar, I received a natural steam facial accompanied by a sulphur stench that Kilauea brought up. There is something exhilarating and terrifying about being in such close proximity to a continuously erupting volcano spewing steam and lava. I felt vulnerable and curious all at once. Just when I thought the humidity seemed unbearable, we reached the rainiest part of Hawaii. Hilo is situated on the east coast and due to heavy rainfall has clumps of tropical, rainforest surrounding it. Away from the sun-worshippers, tanning tourists and exotic beaches brosway of Kona I walked a few steps from the parking lot and leaned brosway over the wall s edge to take in the vast, rushing water that was the Rainbow Falls. I tried swinging from the vine of a gigantic tree that seemed to have been there from the beginning. The red sun had all but disappeared when I returned to Kona. July, 26, 2008 – When we arrived at Huntington Beach for the women’s final event at the U.S. Open of Surfing , the place was packed. Not unusual for a Saturday in Surf City but something historic was taking place on the south side of the pier that made the day truly special. Fourteen year old Malia Manuel defeated seventeen aldo canada year old Coco Ho and the duo became the youngest finalists ever at the U.S. Open of Surfing. In addition, aldo canada both surfers hail from Hawaii, also a first for the final. Manuel’s victory was surprising, even to her. She had never competed at the U.S. Open and never in a two-person heat. Manuel, who lives on the eastern side of Kauai, entered the event as a wild card because she had not competed in enough events this year to be seeded. aldo canada She ended up as the youngest champion in ASP history. Manuel, who will turn 15 next month, claimed an early edge in the 30-minute final and made it stand up, winning aldo canada with a best-two-wave score of 14.34 points. The wind kicked up in the finals and Ho struggled to find a groove in the deteriorating conditions finishing with a score of 7.90. Ho’s father, Michael, and uncle, Derek, both legendary Hawaiian surfers, must have been proud. Even with her second-place finish, it was a day of accomplishments for the teenager, who also won the women’s junior championship making her the first competitor to be in both the women’s final and women’s junior final. Surfing has been ingrained in Malia s blood since she was born. As a baby, her parents would take turns watching her on the sand while the other would catch waves on the beaches of Kauai. As soon as she turned two, Malia started surfing with them. Born and raised in the small lush town of Wailua, Kauai. Malia has been highly parasuco influenced by her culture. Her father is born and raised on Kauai and part Hawaiian, her mother is from Southern California, making Malia hapa haole , she said laughing. At the age of 8, she began surfing in contests and fell in love with the surfing parasuco industry. I never planned on being a professional surfer, it kind of chose me , says Malia. I ve been competing since I was 8 years old and to now be one of the 17 Women going for the World Title, seems pretty surreal parasuco still. Aside from surfing, Malia artistically paints her own surf boards with a Hawaiian / Polynesian theme, inscribed somewhere parasuco in her paintings, is the word KAUNU . The word, which means passion in Hawaiian, embodies her happy-go-lucky spirit. She also is an avid yoga student and runner. parasuco Whether it s hiking in the mountains, going to yoga, running, Malia is the true spirit of island aloha and grace. It s rare to see her without a smile on her face or doing something other than creating beauty through her art, sport activities, or surfing. Banting finished saks fifth the Burton Toyota Pro on a high, posting two scores in the 9-point-range in the Final to seal the win over Nathan Hedge (Narrabeen, NSW/AUS). Banting’s surfing was electric, combining razor sharp snaps with inverted aerials. This is the second ASP 6-Star QS win for the 19-year-old, having previously taken out the Hurley Australian Open of Surfing in Manly in 2012. “This is the closest thing I have to a hometown event,” Banting said. “It’s great to travel a couple hours down the road and compete in a world-class event. After I posted that first 9 I started to get excited and picture myself on the podium already, but I had to tell myself to settle down and get back to the basics and take it just like any other heat. It’s hard to treat it like like any other heat, but you have to try. I won a 6-Star saks fifth when I was 17-years-old and haven’t won one since and I’ve been really hungry to get another win, I got 3rd at the US Open last year, but this feels way better.” Hedge is a former saks fifth Samsung Galaxy ASP World Championship Tour (WCT) surfer, and is hungry to reclaim his spot among the Top 34 surfers in the world. Adriano De Souza (Brazil) won the first 6-Star in Manly, so it was our turn. This is my best result on the ASP QS in a long time, it’s a great start to 2014 for me.” Manuel is coming off a 3rd at the ASP 6-Star Hurley Australian Open of Surfing saks fifth in Manly last week and today she took it all the way, defeating fellow Hawaiian Alessa Quizon in the Final and Sage Erickson (USA) in the Semifinals. Manuel has been the standout surfer for the entire week in the Hunter Ports Women’s Classic, pushing her turns harder than the rest. Manuel takes her good form into next week’s season opening Samsung Galaxy ASP Women’s WCT event, the Roxy Pro Gold Coast. “I didn’t come to Surfest last year and I’m so glad I came back this year,” Manuel said. “I’m really happy to be back in Newcastle, I’m definitely more in love with life today than I was yesterday.
