The team removed a record botero 57 tons of abandoned botero fishing gear as well as various other debris. Included in the cleanup was an 11-ton botero fishing net, which is the largest single piece of net that has ever been removed from the area.
“It’s really botero just a band-aid to the bigger botero problem which is trying to minimize the amount of nets coming in to the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands as well as trying to identify these large nets before they reach our shelf or reef environments here within the state of Hawaii,” said Mark Manuel, chief scientist, NOAA Fisheries. “These nets that we removed definitely destroy a lot of sensitive coral reef habitats within the pristine environments of the monument itself.”
The team also rescued three entangled green sea turtles found in a net and identified four potential derelict fishing boats that may have gone missing during Japan’s devastating earthquake and tsunami in 2011.
“At this point, all the information as far as registration numbers and the names of the boats as descriptions will be passed on to the national NOAA Marine Debris Program, and that information will be passed on to Japan Consulate,” Manuel said.
